Cabinet names priority infrastructure projects

"We held regional discussions in the cities of Odesa, Lviv, Dnipro, Kharkiv and Poltava and identified priority infrastructure projects," Ukrainska Pravda quoted Dovhan as saying. So, three projects are expected to be implemented in Odesa: construction of a new airport runway (estimated at US$150 million), Odesa Big Ring Road ($100 million), and Odesa-Mykolaiv concrete road ($150 million).

"In Lviv, we plan to create a European standard width railway from the city, a cargo terminal with a narrow-to-broad width railway switch, and a passenger link between Lviv and Warsaw. The northern bypass road as part of the Gdansk-Odesa project was being discussed as well," Dovhan said. "The following priority infrastructure projects have been identified in Kharkiv region: the construction of a subway in Kharkiv (about $370 million), which can be financed by loans from the EBRD and the EIB; the introduction of e-tickets for transport services in Kharkiv region; and the completion of construction works at the Kharkiv Airport," the official added.

In his words, the funding for construction of a bridge in the city of Kremenchuk have already been provided, but the project is still being finalized. The construction start is scheduled for September 14. "We have already prepared a feasibility study for the construction of a bridge in Mykolaiv and are waiting for a response from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This year we need to deal with the long construction of bridge in the city of Zaporizhia," Dovhan said. "We have also updated the feasibility study for Kyiv's Podilsko-Voskresensky bridge, allocating UAH 1.2 billion for its construction," he added.

The official noted that funds for repair of locks on the Dnipro River have been allocated for the first time since the country gained independence. "Last time an engineer's foot stepped there was back in 1988. This is a critical situation in terms of environmental safety. It's not just a matter of water communication," the official added.
